Volunteering at Stepney City Farm

Volunteers make a significant contribution to the running of Stepney City Farm, and we are committed to creating meaningful and productive roles for volunteers, and to supporting them in the development of their skills, knowledge and experience.

There are a few different ways that you can start volunteering, depending on what you would like to do and the commitment you can make:

Open Volunteers:

  • Supported group drop-in sessions – no need to book ahead, just turn up on the day
  • Every Tuesday and Thursday, 1pm-4pm
  • Recommended for new volunteers, one-off volunteers, and also for those who would like volunteer longer-term. For your first session, please arrive 10 minutes early for an induction.
  • Sessions may include gardening, animal care, or Farm projects as required; sessions always finish with feeding the animals together.
  • Please note that you will need to arrive for the beginning of the session at 1pm. Meet in the Volunteer Room (in the same building as the Office)

Regular volunteering – animal care or gardening:

  • Commitment of 1 day per week for 3 months
  • A full day runs 10am-4pm
  • Activities can include animal care (any day of the week) or gardening (currently Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays)
  • The long term volunteers are trained in every aspect of animal care and/or gardening, and do their work independently or in pairs
  • It’s a great way to help out the farm whilst learning more about the week-to-week changes at the farm, and the differing jobs throughout the year
  • Please think carefully about whether this is the right option for you as it does require commitment. We always recommend you attend a few open volunteering sessions to get a feel for the place first
  • You can still volunteer long term through our open volunteering programme. In fact, some of our open volunteers have been coming for 2 or more years

If you would like to apply for long term volunteering please fill in our Volunteer Application Form and return to:

Young Volunteers

  • Our Young Volunteers program is currently oversubscribed so we’re sorry to say that we are closed to new young volunteers from May 2019 onwards. It’s fantastic that so many young people aged 12-17 are keen to get involved with the running of the farm and we hope to reopen the opportunity after a review period.
  • We won’t be operating a waiting list but we will send out an email if and when we are able to welcome new volunteers. You can sign up to the farm youth volunteering mailing list here

Regular volunteering – Youth programme

  • We are looking for adult volunteers to help run our Young Volunteer sessions for 12-18yr olds
  • 12.30-4.30pm every Sunday.
  • Minimum commitment of 1 session a month
Are you passionate about animals, plants, food and farming? Do you enjoy working with young people?

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who can help to run a weekly volunteering session for 12-18yr olds on Sunday afternoons from 12.30-4.30pm. You don’t have to come every week but we ask for a minimum commitment of 1 session a month.

This flexible voluntary role is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for someone who is looking to gain hands on experience of working with young people in an outdoor setting. You would be working along side the session leader to supervise and support young people so they can get the most out of their volunteering experience.

To apply, please read the Role Description and fill in the Application Form.

For further questions email tiffany@stepneycityfarm.org to discuss your application.

Volunteering for the Communications Committee

We welcome people with expertise in communications and marketing. We have a monthly communications meeting when tasks are allocated to committee members. If you are interested in getting involved, please email communications@stepneycityfarm.org

Access needs

If you have learning difficulties, mental health issues, accessibility requirements or any other support needs, open volunteering may be a good option for you as these sessions are supported. Please contact us before coming to check whether volunteering at the farm is appropriate for you, e-mail volunteer@stepneycityfarm.org or call 020 7790 8204

Need to know:

Bring clothes you don’t mind getting mucky. We can provide boots, waterproofs and gloves, but please make sure you bring enough warm / dry / comfortable clothes to work outside during your volunteering day!
