The Green Wood Guild

London’s school of traditional woodwork

Barnaby Carder is an internationally respected leader of the “Wood Culture Renaissance” he specialises in the axe and knife carving of Spoons.

Working with his passionate team, he has set up The Green Wood Guild, based at the Farm.

The Green Wood Guild is a unique organisation that gives it’s members the opportunity to explore the world of traditional woodwork.

Led by Barnaby Carder and Nic Westermann – two world respected leaders in the craft, we offer a diverse range of courses, workshops and taster sessions. All based on ancient woodworking skills & techniques, working with traditional hand tools, and using wood straight from the tree, whilst it is still fresh.

Mini Workshops

Our 2-hour mini workshops are a perfect introduction to some fundamental green woodworking skills, focussing on the knife, the axe and the art of turning, which together form the foundation for the craft as a whole. In each of these sessions you will learn about the character of fresh wood, the practice of using edge tools, and the relationship between these two things. All deeply satisfying on their own but also underpinning all the further skills that you can explore in our other workshops!

Foundation Classes

Our foundation classes give you hands on experience and in-depth tuition in the fundamental skills and techniques of green wood working, as well as plenty of wider theory. Run as Day Workshops & 6-Week Evening Classes, suitable for total beginners but also building on the knowledge gained from our Intro Workshops – each revolving around a beautiful product to make yourself and take home!

Bladesmithing Courses

World class blade-smith Nic Westermann is running these classes at our Stepney City Farm Workshop. They’re aimed at demystifying the craft of tool making.

The day course will teach you to how make a ‘straight’ knife, the perfect wood carving tool. Whilst the axe forging weekend will teach you to make an axe head, which you will get to forge, harden, temper and sharpen yourself. There will also be time to fit a handle, that you’ll carve and wedge in place.
