Blacksmithing Courses


Wednesday 16th April, 7-9pm, Saturday 26th April 10am-12 or Wednesday 21st May 7-9pm, £40 per person, per session

Saturday 10th May 10am-4pm, £120 per person. 

Wednesday 14th and 28th May, 10am-12pm, FREE for Tower Hamlets residents and volunteers.

5 people maximum with safety equipment provided, gift vouchers and one to one classes also available upon request.

Course consists of basic blacksmithing, half an hour is theory, one and a half hours practical, heat management, hammer management and making a small item to take home. To enrol and for more course information please contact Richard on 07984 832 492 or email

Free Traditional Hay Raking Course

Wednesday afternoons, 4 places.

Make a traditional hay rake for Stepney city farm. These classes are for unemployed residents of Tower Hamlets who can bring proof that they are in receipt of income related benefits. A great introduction to green woodwork and basic joinery skills. This course includes sawing, drilling and cutting a mortise and tenon joint. To book a place please call Barn-07950 751 811.

Free Throwing Course PotteryHand made pots

Thursday’s 2-4pm for 5 weeks, maximum of 4 people, booking essential. Starts 1st May-29th May or 24th July-21st August.

This is a great way to learn how to throw on the potters’ wheel in a small friendly group setting. This 5 week evening course will cover all the basics of throwing from preparing the clay, throwing a cylinder, moving onto bowl and finally trimming down and glazing your pieces.

This course is free and only open to residents of Tower Hamlets who are in receipt of income related benefits. The course is 5 weeks long and students must be able to come to all classes, each class is 2 hours long and materials, tools and aprons are also provided free of charge. Click here to book a place.

Sunday Taster Sessions – Pottery

Sunday’s (10am-12pm, 1-3pm or 3.30-5.30pm), £30 per person, Maximum 4 people, adults only, booking essential. 

Ideal for couples, families or friends to have a play, learn more about pottery and gain practical experience of working with clay. Anything made will be dried, fired and glazed for you to collect at a later date. This 2 hour taster session serves as a great introduction to ceramics, learn how to work with the material and build something using a range of techniques learnt at the workshop including hand building and throwing. To book click here.

Beginners Pottery Throwing Evening Class

Wednesday’s (6.30-8.30pm), 30th April-28th May or 4th June-2nd July or 23rd July-20th August, £175 for 5 weeks – includes all tools, materials and firing (4 students max).

This a great way to learn how to throw on the potters wheel in a small group. This 5 week course will cover the basics of throwing from preparing the clay, throwing a cylinder then moving onto a bowl and finally trimming and glazing your pieces. This course is suitable for both beginners and intermediate an ideal way to both learn a new skill, practise or just make pots. Please follow this link to book.

Intermediate Pottery Throwing Evening Class

Thursday’s (6.30-8.30pm), 1st May-29th May or 12th June-10th July or 24th July-21st August, £175 for 5 weeks-includes all tools, materials and firing (4 students max).

The intermediate Thursday evening classes are the perfect follow up for the beginner’s course or great if you already have throwing experience. As well as a chance to practice your throwing under expert guidance you can also try out different shapes and learn new techniques. Each class will start with a demo on throwing off the hump, making plates, pulling handles as well as dipping and pouring glazes. This is also a chance for you to realize a project of your own and the course can include something to suit you. To book follow this link.

Weekend Pottery Throwing Course

Saturday and Sunday (10am-5pm both days), 24th & 25th May, 14th & 15th June or 26th & 27th July, £175 for 2 days - includes all tools, materials and firing (4 students max).

This is essentially the 5 week evening course but over an intensive weekend. The first morning we focus on the basics, preparing our clay and getting the technique of throwing perfected with cylinders, with the afternoon spent working on your individual project be it mug, bowl or plate. The Sunday is spent trimming down pots, adding handles etc. then slipping your pots for decoration. Decorating slip is liquid coloured clay and a great way to finish leather hard pots before the first firing.

This weekend is a great to make headway with your throwing skills over a short focused period of time, also to complete a small project quickly. The weekend throwing course is suitable for both beginners and intermediate. The day will include two 20-minute tea breaks and an hour for lunch, either your own packed lunch or from our café or our Saturday farmers market. To book click here.

One to One Pottery Tuition 

Monday and Tuesday evenings (times flexible) or Sunday mornings (10am-12pm). £30 per hour includes all tools, materials and firing.

Friendly one to one tuition ideal for learning how to throw on the potter’s wheel, hand building, developing a range of decorating techniques and a great opportunity to realise a project of your own with expert help. These sessions can be tailored to you with times and dates to suit including weekdays, evenings and weekends.
