Trees

The Farm is home to a variety of trees including field maple, poplar, sycamore and horse chestnut. We hope to add still more. We’ve teamed up with the London Orchard Project to plant an orchard along Stepney Way including delicious Spartan apples, Conference pears and Coe’s golden drop plums. Stepney City Farm tree interns care for and harvest our fruit trees and act as knowledge-sharers with the community.

We’re also working to increase our hedgerows and have been given new plants by the Woodland Trust. These provide habitats for many species of songbirds, insects and mammals. Our older hedgerows are being tended to keep them thick, bushy and valuable. Our tree interns help us constantly come up with ways to improve our trees’ health and productivity.

“We have nothing to fear and a great deal to learn from trees, that vigorous and pacific tribe which without stint produces strengthening essences for us, soothing balms, and in whose gracious company we spend so many cool, silent, and intimate hours.” -Marcel Proust
