The Pig Idea

“Pigs can be a highly effective recycling system, with the potential to turn a massive problem of food waste into a delicious solution. It’s mad not to.”

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Chef, Author and Supporter

The Pig Idea aimed to put food waste back on the menu for British pigs. They lobbied to change European law for a return to the traditional practice of feeding surplus waste food to pigs.

In 2015, the Pig Idea campaigners reared eight pigs on Stepney City Farm on a healthy menu of food waste from around London: spent brewer’s grain, whey, unsold vegetables and okara.

The campaign was supported by award-winning chef Thomasina Miers of Wahaca, Feeding the 5000 food waste expert Tristram Stuart, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Emma Freud, Fergus Henderson, Sara Cox, Giorgio Locatelli, John Torode and Rosie Boycott.
